The multiplication constant, infinite, of a nuclear fuel is determined by measuring the oscillations in reactivity caused by the periodic insertion, in a nuclear reactor, of the fissionable material under test. The amounts of absorber associated with the test material is varied and the corresponding changes in power observed. The test rod, 1, is given a vertical oscillatory motion in the reactor core, 6, by the motor 7. Cooling water flows over the rod, 1, inside the pipe, 2. The rod has one section filled with helium, i.e. void of fissile material, and a second section containing the test material. The two sections occupy the reactor centre alternately at the two extreme positions of the rod.
