1,174,566. Electron beam apparatus. VICKERS Ltd. 7 June, 1967 [7 June, 1966], No. 25412/66. Heading H1D. In a process of welding or inspecting a workpiece by means of an electron beam, the electron gun with large area cathode 8, shield electrode 2 and anode 6 is operated so that only an inner portion amounting to not more than one-half of the emissive area of the cathode is actually emitting electrons. The effective emissive area is thus insensitive to lateral displacement of the cathode itself. The cathode 8 is heated by electron bombardment from an auxiliary gun 3, 4, stray electrons being prevented from reaching the shield electrode 2 either by mounting the cathode 8 on a conical support of refractory material or by the interposition of a conductive plate 5. The diameter of the cathode 8 may be 2-3 mm. The process of inspecting a workpiece may be that disclosed in Specification 24951/66.
