Apparatus for branding carcases comprises at least one pair of guide members 26, 28 arranged in a vertical plane and along which branding rollers are moved, means for resiliently forcing the rollers, into contact with the carcase, and an endless chain 80 associated with each pair of guide members and connected to each branding roller whereby the rollers are moved so that one roller will be in its uppermost position on its guide member when the other is in its lowest position. Each guide member 26 or 28 is pivoted on a vertical shaft 30, 32 and carries a slidable bushing 64 which has a plate 66 shielding a gas-heated branding roller, the bushing being connected by a telescopic link 72 to a carriage 76 movable on the associated vertical shaft and forming a link in the chain 80. An electric motor 100 drives the chain and is started by means of a switch operated by the guide members 26, 28 as they move inwardly to contact the carcase and stopped by a switch operated by one of the carriages 76 as it reaches an extreme position. The guide members are located in a box-like framework, members 26, 28 being provided on each side of the framework. Shafts 30, 32 carry wheels 38, 42 which run on crossmembers 62, 56 which are moved backwards and forwards by means of cranks 48 located on a shaft 44 driven by a further motor (not shown) thereby causing guide members 26, 28 to move inwardly, which movement is aided by springs 34 on the shafts 30, 32. The carcases are suspended from a conveyer for movement through the apparatus.
