In disc brakes, an automatic adjuster comprising a non-rotating screw 17 carrying a nut 16 which engages an end face of a piston 6, the nut 16 supporting a sleeve 11 which is frictionally engaged with the piston 6 in a unidirectional manner, so as to cause rotation of the nut 16 on the screw 17 during application of the brakes. As shown, hydraulic fluid is injected at 9 and operates a piston 6a and, via a channel 4a the second piston 6 so as to force pads 5, 5a against the disc 1. Return springs 25 are provided. A hand brake is provided by a cable 19 coupled to a lever 18 which rotates a shaft 20 so as to deflect a connecting rod 21 against the end of the right-hand screw 17. Because of deflection of the disc 1 or supporting flange 29, this results in both pads 5, 5a being forced against the disc 1. Slack adjustment.-In the event of wear, each time the brake is applied, the excessive movement of the piston 6 causes corresponding movement of a circular spring 14 which engages the sleeve 11 so that an inclined slot 12, engaging a pin 15, causes rotation of the nut 16 on the pin 17 so as to take up the slack. The end 22 of spring 14 is located in a slot 10 in the sleeve 11, a gap 10a being provided so that adjustment is only made when the pads have become worn. The adjuster is reset manually by a tool engaging the screw 17. Manual resetting of the righthand screw 17 as achieved by a worm 28 engaging teeth on the end of the screw 17.
