Pile yarn is applied to a carrier layer by means of a bent feed channel terminating above the carrier layer for carrying the pile yarn, and an up and down movable device above the feed channel which with every downward move presses a new amount of cut pile yarn into the channel. The feed channel is limited at one side only by the circumference of a cylinder driven in one direction which moves downward simultaneously with the up and down moving device.
