Novel quaternization products of amino group-substituted cellulose and of amino group-substituted hydrophilic, water swellable and water insoluble copolymers of polyhydroxy compounds with bifunctional substances and a process for the preparation thereof

A quaternary ammonium compound which is at least 80% quaternized is obtained by reaction of an alkylene oxide or reactive derivative thereof, with an amino substituted cellulose or an amino substituted hydrophilic, waterswellable, water-insoluble copolymer of a polyhydroxy compound with a compound Z-R-X, where Z and X are each halo or epoxy and R is an aliphatic radical of 3-10 C atoms. The polyhydroxy compound is a polysacchoride, a hydroxyl-group containing derivative thereof, a partial depolymerization product thereof, PVA or a carbohydrate. Reaction may bo effected in an aqueous medium in the presence of a suspending agent, e.g. toluene. Diethylaminoethyl cellulose, and a copolymer of dextran and epichlorhydrin carrying diethylaminoethyl groups are exemplified. The products are useful as ion exchangers.
