The collector 1 of a discharge tube, e.g. a klystron or travelling wave tube, is of rotationally symmetric form, the contour of the generatrix of the inner surface being such as to ensure that, for a continuously diverging electron beam received therein, the power density incident upon the inner surface is substantially uniform over that surface. The collector is at least partially screened from the focusing field, to permit the beam to diverge under the action of space charge. A differential equation, involving both the D.C. power of the beam and its diverging profile, to be satisfied by the collector surface is given, and an approximate method for constructing a surface satisfying it is outlined.
