Sodium bicarbonate is made by the ammoniasoda process in a column having a plurality of superposed compartments wherein carbon dioxide is contacted with a magma of sodium bicarbonate supported on a horizontal perforated plate and passing from compartment to compartment through a downcomer off set in relation to the downcomers of adjacent compartments, at least one of the lower compartments in the column having an arranging of spaced cooling tubes extending across the compartment and over which the magma of sodium bicarbonate flows, baffles being arranged to direct rising carbon dioxide first upwardly in a central zone of the cooling arrangement, then downwardly in adjacent zones thereof and then upwardly again in the outer zones of the arrangement to the compartment above. In compartments with cooling tubes the perforations of the plates are arranged in rows co-extensive with the cooling tubes while in the other compartments the perforations are arranged in concentric circles. The downcomers project above the perforated plates, are disposed in a peripheral zone thereof and may be inclined to the vertical. A column preferably has a diameter of between 6 and 9 feet and may have between 14 and 20 compartments of which 4 or 5 contain cooling means.
