A method and apparatus for the reversal of, or controlling the contrast before or after reversal of, a transparent original in which one or each side of the original is illuminated by a light beam so as to give rise to a reflected image and/or a transmitted image, the ratio of the intensities of which images (when both are present) being controlled prior to projecting the combined images on to photo-sensitive material or on to a screen. The ratio of the intensities may be such that a reversal of the original is projected. As shown, the original 1 is illuminated by a lamp 4 to give a transmission image, and by a lamp 6 to give a reflected image, the intensities of which images can be varied by light modulators 9, 10 comprising a set of optical wedges or two sheets of polarizers. Alternatively, the intensities of the lamps may be varied, in which case a filter for compensation of optical balance is provided. The combined image is projected on to a screen 3. In another embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) a single lamp and an arrangement of semi and fully reflecting mirrors are used to provide both beams.
