1,088,010. Making ball point pens; drilling, forging. F. SCH€CHTER. Dec. 9, 1964 [Dec. 9, 1963; Sept. 29, 1964], No. 50048/64. Headings B3A, B3C and B3H. [Also in Division B6] A method of making a writing point for a ball point pen includes the steps of fitting a ball seating member 24 rigidly into a ball encircling member 22, machining the ball supporting surface of the seating member to be concentric with the inner wall of the encircling member, forming the ball seat by impressing the ball or a die member thereinto and securing the ball in the encircling member. The seating member 24 is a press fit in the member 22 and initially is only formed internally with a recess 30 which serves as an ink chamber. Holes 39, 41 are jig-drilled in succession and the assembly is placed in a jig 35b, Fig. 6. A boring tool 43 opens out the hole 39 to form a hole 42a and forms a ball seating surface 51, which extends into the member 22. The tool face 49 finishes off the face 32 of the encircling member, if required. A ball 21 or a die member corresponding thereto is placed on the seating 51, after ink grooves 52 have been formed therein, and axial loading is applied to shape the seating to the exact curvature of the ball. Finally spinning tool means are applied to shape the end of the member 22 as at 55 to retain the ball on the seating. The encircling member 22 may be formed from a stainless steel ball 60SP1/SP by a punch 63 acting in co-operation with die members 61, 64. The closed end 60SP11/SP of the member 62 so formed is jig-drilled, Fig. 13 (not shown), after it has been fitted to the seating member 24. In alternative embodiments a separate seat (68), (71) for the ball may be provided on the member (24), Figs. 15B, 16B (not shown). In a further embodiment the encircling member is integral with the point body (75) of the pen and the seating member (76) is an annular insert therein, Figs. 17, 18 (not shown).
