Oxides of platinum and/or palladium or oxides of these metals mixed with those of other metals not harmful to their catalytic properties are produced by electrolyzing a molten bath comprising an alkali metal nitrate and an alkali metal halide with an anode of Pt or Pd, Pt-Pd, or alloys based thereon. Preferably the bath is operated in the temperature range 340 to 520 DEG C. and consists of NaNO3 containing up to 10% LiCl optionally with 0.1 to 1% NaOH. The oxides are extracted from the broken-up cake of solidified electrolyte by leaching outside the cell with hot water followed by treatment of the oxide with hot dilute HNO3. Electrolysis may be effected in a cell of glass, Ni or stainless steel with a cathode of Ni wire or sheet or the nickel cell as cathode. Specific anode materials referred to are Pt-base alloys containing Rh, Ir or Ru.
