摘要
PICT:0999534/C6-C7/1 An aluminium-lead alloy comprising 30-80% of aluminium and 20-70% of lead, together with a small amount (up to 5%) of lead oxide is produced by forming a powder mixture of lead monoxide and aluminium, heating between 800 DEG and 1100 DEG F. in a reducing atmosphere to reduce substantially all the monoxide and compacting the mixture. The aluminium may be replaced by conventional pre-alloyed powders containing such elements as magnesium, silicon, copper and nickel, compositions exemplified being aluminium-4% silicon, and aluminium-1% copper-1% nickel. The reduced powder mixture may be compacted on to a backing strip to form a material suitable for bearings. The aluminium or alloy powder should have a particle size ranging from less than 100 mesh to less than 325 mesh, while a suitable litharge has an average particle size of 5 microns. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, backing strip 4 fed from coil 6 is provided with a layer 16 of lead-monoxide-aluminium powder mixture from hopper 10, the layer being smoothed by spreader 14. The coated strip then enters heating chamber 18 where it encounters a reducing atmosphere at a temperature of 800 to 1100 DEG F., and then passes between compacting rolls, the lower of which has a peripheral speed equal to the speed of the strip, while the upper revolves at a slower rate, generally at a peripheral speed of one-tenth to one-fifth of the speed of the strip. The compacted strip then passes through cooling chamber 32 where it is rapidly cooled to room temperature in an inert atmosphere, before being coiled at 36.
