Cyclodisilazanes of formula FORM:1121481/C3/1 are prepared by treating an aminosilane of formula R1Si.H.NHR2 with a catalyst of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, aluminium, or a hydride or complex hydride thereof, R1 is hydrogen, halogen, or an organic group of not more than 24 carbon atoms united by a carbon atom or oxygen atom Si, R2 is an organic group of not more than 24 carbon atoms united by a carbon atom to N, or a trialkylsilyl, or trialkylsilyl methylene group having not more than 8 carbon atoms in any alkyl group, or R1 and R2 together form a polymethylene group, or two groups R1 taken together represent a polymethylene group having up to 11 methylene groups united at each end to the same silicon atom. The aminosilane may be formed in situ from silanes of formula R12SiH2 and amines of formula R2NH2 in an approximately equimolar ratio. The amine may be replaced by a disilylaminosilylamine compound. Inert solvents may be employed. The temperature is such that hydrogen is evolved. The reaction may also be promoted by strong tertiary amines, by cobalt or palladium chlorides, or by colloidal metals. A very large number of possible R1 and R2 groups are listed.ALSO:Lubricants, hydraulic fluids and heat transfer liquids comprising compounds of the formula FORM:1121481/C4-C5/1 where R1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom, or an organic group having not more than 24 carbon atoms united through a carbon or oxygen atom to silicon, each R2 is an organic group having not more than 24 carbon atoms united through a carbon atom to nitrogen, a trialkylsilyl or trialkylsilylmethylene group, or two groups R1 taken together represent a polymethylene group having up to 11 methylene groups united at each end to the same silicon atom. There is no exemplification of such uses for these cyclodisilazane compounds.
