[Also in Division G3] In a system for automatically controlling a sulphur recover-process involving the oxidation of H 2 S (see Division G3) the effluent gas is continuously sampled and tested by an infra absorption red analyser. Dual pumps 12 suck in equal volumes of air and effluent which are discharged in a first phase, directly to the analyser, and in a second phase through a catalytic oxidation furnace 15 where the H 2 S is oxidised to SO 2 before analysis. In the analyser to eliminate the effect of any CO 2 which may be present a filter 19 of pure CO 2 between the infra-red source 16 and test cell 17 absorbs in the 4.2 to 4.5 micron band, which overlaps a weak SO 2 absorption in the 3.9 to 4.5 micron band. SO 2 is estimated in the first measurement since it has a high absorption in the 7-9. 5 micron band and the weak effect of H 2 S in the 7-8. 5 micron band may be neglected to an accuracy of 0.3%. During the second measurement, the increase in SO 2 due to oxidation of H 2 S in furnace 15 represents the H 2 S measurement. These measurements appear as D.C. output signals from receiver 18 and are fed-through amplifier 22 to the recorder, IV. The recorder drives a synchro transmitter supplying signals to the automatic control system.
