A ferromagnetic ferrite material of spinel crystal structure and suitable for microwave devices requiring stable thermal properties has the formula where x+y= 100 and 0.5 # y # 90, and L and Q represent one or more of the bivalent metals FeSP**/SP, MnSP**/SP, CoSP**/SP, NiSP**/SP, MgSP**/SP, ZnSP**/SP, R represents one or more of the trivalent metals FeSP***/SP, CrSP***/SP, AlSP***/SP, GaSP***/SP, MnSP***/SP, Ti is quadrivalent titanium, and Fe 2 O comprises at least ¥ of the R 2 O 3 . Essentially the material is a solid solution of the two components (LOR 2 O 3 ) and (TiO 2 2QO), both of which have similar spinel crystal structures, and is preferably made by sintering a mixture of these two components in powdered form. The two components may each have undergone a presintering in air at 1000‹ C. for an hour prior to the main sintering. The main sintering, which is carried out after the powder mixture has been pressed into shape, comprises a slow rise in temperature to 800‹ C. over several hours, 4 to 5 hours at 1200‹ C. and slow cooling over 20 hours, all in O 2 . The alternative process of sintering from the constituent metal oxides is also envisaged. Specific examples disclosed are 70(NiOFe 2 O 3 ) + 30(TiO 2 2ZnO), 90(NiOFe 2 O 3 ) + 10(TiO 2 2MgO), 90(0.92MgO, 0.18- MnO, 0.90Fe 2 O 2 ) + 10(T 1 O 2 . 2ZnO). The material may be used in a Faraday rotator and in a phase-shifter where a constant phase-shift over the temperature range 0-120‹ C. may be obtained.
