976, 347. Fuelling reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. July 10, 1961 [July 11, 1960], No. 24868/61. Heading G6C. A marine based reactor comprises a pressure vessel 1 enclosing a core 4 having horizontal fuel element receiving passages 5, passageways 3 terminating in a part-spherical surface 7 of the shielding 6 serving for transferring the fuel elements by means of a charge machine 10. The machine 10 is universally mounted at its centre of gravity about a pivot point retreated at the centre of curvature of the surface 7, movement about a horizontal axis being obtained by trunnions 13, the base plate 15 being rotatable about a vertical axis. The ends 8 of the passageways 3 are curved so that their apertures lie in planes tangential to the surface 7 whereby a fluid-tight connection may be made between a telescopic nozzle 16 of the machine 10 and a selected passageway. The machine 10 includes a magazine for storing fuel elements and means for transferring them to or from the reactor. The nozzle 16 may also be connected to a storage pipe 18, a discharge pipe 21, or to a pipe (not shown) containing fresh fuel elements.
