970,279. X-ray tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 17, 1961 [Jan. 18, 1960], No. 1900/61. Heading H1D. A high voltage electron discharge tube, e.g. an X-ray tube, has a plurality of aligned beamcontrolled electrodes 22a, 22b, 22c, Fig. 1, each resiliently supported by a structure within a single rigid elongated dielectric cylindrical envelope 35, the structure comprising pins 42 either fused within the wall of the envelope, Fig. 1, or being received within sleeves 80, Fig. 7, fused within the wall, the pins extending radially inwards to support the electrodes, the resiliency of the structure serving to absorb mechanical stresses generated in the electrodes by electric fields and heat during operation of the tube thereby to reduce stresses imparted to the envelope. Preferably, each electrode has three coplanar pins equiangularly spaced about the electrode. The pins may be connected to pin brackets 41, Fig. 4, attached to the electrode or may be sealed into sleeves attached to the electrode. Alternatively, Fig. 7, the pins may extend through an annular ring 73 to which the electrode 70 is attached by three angle brackets 72. In a method of manufacturing the tube, the envelope is weakened at the portions where the pins will be accommodated by forming bubbles or by local heating, and assembling the electrodes in aligned relation within the envelope by introducing the pins through the envelope.
