In a self-anchored suspension bridge the deck 10 is formed separately from the stiffening structure 1, the anchorages 12 for the suspension cables 3 transmitting a horizontal component of the thrust directly to the deck and not to the stiffening structure. The hangers 2 pass through longitudinal slots in the deck to the stiffening structure 1 which may have its upper portion as a welded unit with an anti-friction membrane interposed between the structure and the deck to permit relative longitudinal movement. The cables 3 are secured to an anchorage 12, having limited longitudinal movement by virtue of links 13, 14 and connected by a knuckle joint 17 to the deck 10 only.
