The reciprocable carriage of a flat machine has a disc cam 3, with tracks 4, 5, locatable in any one of five positions to move needle cams 9, 10, 11 which have pegs 6, 8 and 7 located in the tracks 4, 5. The carriage has fixed cams 15,16 and a pivotable cam 20. The cam 11 is spring loaded to bias it as shown in Fig. 4 and the path of the needle butts on sliders is shown by chain-dot lines in Figs. 2 to 6 (Figs. 3, 5, 6 not shown).
