A rocket or jet propulsion unit is operated with the aid of a fuel comprising molten lithium, which is injected into the central zone of the combustion chamber and reacted therein with an oxidizing agent, an auxiliary fuel of lower combustion temperature being simultaneously injected into the combustion chamber and reacted with an oxidizing agent so that the central zone of the chamber is separated from the wall of the chamber by a peripheral zone where the lower temperature combustion reaction takes place. The melting point of the lithium may be reduced by alloying it with small quantities of sodium and potassium. The auxiliary fuel may be kerosene; hydrazine or an aromatic amine such as xylidine. The molten lithium and the auxiliary fuel may be reacted with the same oxidizing agent or different oxidizing agents may be used for the two fuels. Examples of suitable oxidizing agents are nitric acid and fuming nitric acid.
