862,968. Rolling; winding and reeling. DEMAG A.G. Oct. 22, 1957 [Oct. 22, 1956 (2); Nov. 14, 1956], No. 32996/57. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for guiding the head of rolled strip towards reeling means includes a series of groups of driving and guiding rollers which groups come successively into position over a bed as the head of the strip reaches them and disengage the strip when the head thereof reaches the next group of rollers, so that when the head of the strip reaches a pair of rollers disposed beyond the bed and 'before the reeling means and this pair of rollers is braked, to allow the strip to be inserted in the reeling drum, strip behind this pair of rollers may accumulate in loops on the bed. The head of strip from a rolling mill passes through rollers 8, 9, driven at the speed of the strip, through swing- able guide-means 6 to opposed rollers 15 of a group of rollers 16 carried on a vertically slidable support 17. The rollers 15 of each opposed pair of the group are mounted in rocker arms 22 and are swung towards one another to engage the strip by electromagnetic means 29 operating through linkages 31, 32, the means 29 being energized after a predetermined number of revolutions of the roller 9 which actuates counting means 13 (not shown). The rollers 15 of a group are driven by an electric motor 27. As the strip head leaves the first group 16 of rollers 15 and enters between the rollers 15 of the next group 33 the electromagnetic means 29 of this group are actuated by the counting means 13 to close the pairs of rollers 15 of this group on to the strip. At the same time the rollers 15 of the group 16 are moved apart from one another to disengage the strip and the group, on the support 17, is lowered below a bed 1 by piston means 21 and linkages 19, 20. Strip then passes into group of rollers 34, and group 33 are lowered, to allow the guide means 6 to swing to loop the strip on the bed 1 behind the roller group 34. Strip then passes between rollers 2 and 3 which are immediately braked so that the head of the strip, after being trimmed by cutters 5, may be inserted into a slit of a winding drum on a reel 4 formed'by a coil pin 35 and clamping jaw 37, which jaw is then rocked by a piston 39 to clamp the strip and the reel is rotated. The group 34 of rollers 15 is lowered as the strip enters the rollers 2 to leave the bed 1 free for looping. Stripper means 41 push the wound drum on to a discharge conveyer 42. The strip is alternately fed to two reels. The rollers 15 have a slightly increasing cross-section in the direction of movement of the strip. In a modification, Fig. 7, of a looping bed 44 is subdivided by a vertically movable longitudinal wall 45 (not shown) and either three sets of groups of rollers 15 may be provided or one set movable transversely of the bed. The two outer sets may be used with the wall 45 in position and the centre set lowered or only the centre set with the outer sets lowered and the wall 45 out of position.
