Class 40(5) A frequency discriminator for providing a voltage characteristic of the amplitude and frequency shift of a voice formant comprises a variable frequency oscillator 7 the output of which is modulated by the formant signal, a single sideband load pass filter 2, the frequencies of the selected sideband then being passed through networks 3, 4 having reversed attenuation/frequency characteristics with respect to one another, the two outputs from 3, 4 being compared in a comparator 5 which will give an output if the formant is shifted in frequency, said output voltage later giving an indication of said frequency shift and being supplied to a controller 6 to feed back a voltage to the oscillator 7 so to vary the frequency thereof that the centre frequency of the selected sideband is maintained at the centre of the passband of filter 2.
