Class 100(1) [Also in Group XXII] In a machine in which a continuously driven feed mechanism feeds strip to a work station at which an intermittently actuated tool operates, e.g., shears, punches, forms or stamps indicia, on the strip the tool while operating upon the strip pulls the strip in the direction of feed at a speed greater than the feeding speed, and the feeding mechanism has a tension device which, allows the strip to be so pulled but which when the tool releases the strip returns it to the position it would otherwise have had. The strip 38, Fig. 5, is fed by intergeared rollers 24, 25 to a tool consisting of an upper die 17 secured in a frame 16 mounted on two continuously rotated eccentrics 15 and a lower die 19 guided in slots 18 in the frame 16 and connected by an arm to the shaft 14 of the lower eccentric 15. The dies when working upon the strip pull it faster than it is fed by the rollers 24, 25. To allow for this, the driving gear 26, Fig. 7, for the rollers is loosely mounted on the shaft of the lower roller 24 and has a projection 26a which normally engages and rotates an arm 26b secured to the shaft. When the dies 17, 19 release the strip 38 it is drawn back by the rollers owing to a spring 26c which urges the arm 26b against the projection 26a. In a modification, the arm 52, Fig. 9A, supporting the lower die 50 is mounted on an eccentric 53 which can be actuated by an electromagnetic device 56 to move the lower die to an inoperative position.
