873,074. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 9, 1959 [June 27, 1958], No. 20774/58. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor fuel element channel, the coolant flow is controlled by an automatically adjustable aperture at the outlet responsive to coolant temperature. As shown, coolant flows upwards through the fuel elements 121 and through the annular passage 133 between the element and graphite moderator 108. The two streams combine at the apertures 131, at the upper end of 121, and pass through the plug 122 in the neutron shield 111. In the plug 122, the ribs 124 are welded at their upper end to the sleeve 127 and, being formed of different materials, a differential thermal expansion occurs so as to increase the separation between the rib and recess 129, 130 with an increase in coolant temperature, thereby raising the flow rate through 133. The arrangement is applied to the reactor, Fig. 1, in which carbon dioxide coolant is circulated by the pump 118 through the channels 109 in the graphite moderator 108. The gas flow from 118 along the annular passage 119 between ducting 104 and 105 into the pressure vessel 100, downwardly through passage 113, upwardly through passages 109 into box 106 and then through the superheater 138, evaporator 139 and economiser 140. Specification 873,073 is referred to.
