In a transmission line having two or more parallel connected spaced conductors 4, 5 per phase or pole, and having a heating current circulated round the loop formed by the conductors 4, 5 from a supply 10, 11 to prevent or remove ice formation, impedances are provided to prevent the supply being short-circuited. In a D.C. transmission line, the supply is derived from a transformer 10, and the impedances are in the form of chokes 12. A parallel capacitor 13 or a series capacitor 113 may be provided to improve the power factor of the heating current. In an A.C. transmission line, the chokes are replaced by capacitors, and the supply is derived from a rectifier. The insulation of the transformer 10 must be suitable for the full-line to earth voltage.
