Apparatus for determining the viscosity of fluids and semi-fluids comprises a set of hydrodynamically similar sinkers differing in size or weight, each sinker being attached to a length of wire, the wires each having two spaced-apart markers the distance between which is known. As described, the sinkers are in the form of spheres and the wires have loops at their upper ends to enable them to be handled easily. The time for a particular sinker to fall through the material under test is found and from this the apparent viscosity can be calculated.
