Class 59 A comminutor for screenings comprises stationary tools in the form of a grid-like cage forming a disintegration chamber and at least one tool in the form of a cutter, beater and grinder rotatable about an axis and mounted within the disintegration chamber so as to be pivotable about an axis eccentric to the first-mentioned axis, the shortest distance between the eccentric axis and the grid-like cage being less than the distance between the eccentric axis and at least one point on the periphery of the tool, the arrangement being such that, when the comminutor is in operation, the or each rotatable tool will move outwardly under the action of centrifugal force to comminute material between the rotatable and stationary tools. As shown, the comminutor forms part of a sewage purifying plant and comprises a single tool in the form of an overhung crankpin l which is rotatable within a cage formed of obliquely-arranged tools e. The tool l is provided with a counterweight in the form of a crankpin n, the crankpins l, n being mounted in crankshafts k, m mounted in a block j driven by a motor-driven main shaft i. The tools e are in the form of cutter bars which may be exchangeably and/or adjustably fitted or the entire cage may consist of a single casting. The crankpins l, n are in the form of triangular prisms, Fig. 3, the centres of gravity o of which are situated outside the plane p containing the main shaft i and the axes of the crankshafts k, m. The outward throw of the tool may be limited by stop members. The screenings are introduced tangentially into a chamber a in the direction of the arrow r 1 , Fig. 2, and induce a downward cyclonic eddy the formation of which is supported by a nozzle s which discharges into the chamber a in the direction of the arrow r 2 . The chamber a communicates through an opening b with an antechamber c. The pumping action of the tool l likewise induces the formation of an eddy which draws the material from the antechamber c into the disintegration chamber f. The cage is provided with a gap g, Fig. 2, to prevent ineffective circulation of the screenings. If the content of suspended sludge is particularly large, the effluent may be arranged to fall temporarily over a weir, which may be adjustable in height, into the antechamber. The comminuted screenings escape through the gap between the bars e into a diffuser d to be carried away in the direction of the arrow r 3 , Fig. 2.
