In order to protect a high-voltage winding of a transformer from voltage impulses the voltage distribution is linearized by the capacitive effect of insertions wound together with the winding. Disc coils 1, 2 (shown displaced though actually coaxial) are wound in series and an insertion shown dotted is connected to the coil 1 at 3 and has turns 6 and 7 wound together with turns of the adjacent coil 2. The end may be returned to the coil 1 to minimise the insulation required.
