A sprayable film-forming preparation, e.g. for hair grooming, consists of a solution in a mixture of low-boiling alcohol and aerosol propellant of a copolymer of 30-90% by weight of N-vinylpyrrolidone with 10-70% by weight of a vinyl ester. Alcohols mentioned are methanol, ethanol and iso-propanol. The aerosol propellants are Freons, i.e. chloro-fluoro hydrocarbons of 1-2 carbon atoms. The copolymer may be made in bulk, in solution in the lower alcohol, or with the monomers dissolved or dispersed in water, or an organic solvent, e.g. benzene, dioxane, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, ethylene dichloride or mixtures of such solvents. Polymerization is effected in absence of air using as catalyst substances such as benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, tert.-butyl peroxide, hexoyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide or a -azodiisobutyronitrile. Monomers mentioned are N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone; 3,4- or 5-methyl- or ethyl-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone; 3,3-dimethyl - N - vinyl - 2 - pyrrolidone; 3 - phenyl-3b -diethyl - aminoethyl - N - vinyl - 2 - pyrrolidone; 5-hydroxymethyl-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone; vinyl acetate; vinyl glycolate; vinyl chloride; vinyl formate; vinyl propionate; vinyl butyrate. Preparation of copolymers of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone using 2,21azo-di-isobutyronitrile as catalyst are described as follows: Example 1 with vinyl acetate in 2-butanone which is evaporated to leave a solid product; (2) with vinyl acetate in ethanol. Part of the product was evaporated to dryness and the other to a 50% solid solution in ethanol; (3) with vinyl chloride in 2-butanone; (5) with vinyl propionate in ethanol; (6) with vinyl propionate in 2-butanone. The alcoholic solution obtained in Example 2 was mixed with Freon and put into an aerosol sprayer (see Examples 4, 9). Examples 7, 8 are similar, using the copolymers of Examples 5, 6, respectively. Example 10 prepares a complex of a copolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and vinyl acetate with granular iodine (see Specification 799,622) and adds it in an aerosol sprayer to a mixture of the alcoholic solution of Example 2 with trichloromonofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane.
