Coils of steel strip are pickled inside cages which are transferred to, and rotated in, different baths, the cages being moved successively to different stations, equally spaced, the cages resting, and rotating, in bearings at each station, the cages simultaneously being lifted, transferred one station and lowered, and then rotated. Cages 10 receive the steel coils 11 at station A, being supported by the jacks 25. Pickling takes place in stations B and C (stations C and D are not shown in the drawing). The coil is water-rinsed at D and given an oil bath at E. Unloading is effected at station F. The jacks 25 (screw- or hydraulically-operated) are carried on a skeleton carriage 19 which reciprocates on rails 18 being supported by wheels 20. The jacks (shown as screw-operated) are actuated simultaneously by a shaft 26 on each side of the baths. The carriage is reciprocated by a reversible motor 21 driving an endless belt 22. By'this mechanism the cages can be lifted clear of the baths, moved along one station and then lowered, the carriage 19 being returned to its first position. One end of each cage spindle carries a clutch to engage a corresponding element (driven through a hydraulic gearing to avoid shock on engagement) driven by an electric motor. If desired this motor and gear can move with the cage.
