To avoid errors in gauging the internal diameter of a workpiece 3, a 3-point gauge is provided with a counterweight 13 mounted on an arm 12 in order to ensure that the centre of gravity of the gauge is situated below the measuring points. Four contact points 4 are provided as shown and a fifth contact point 7 mounted on a movable lever 10 pivoted at 9 transmits movement to a dial gauge 11 to indicate out of roundness or to measure the diameter of the hole 2. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, a weight 14 is mounted on the end of the member carrying the contact points 4 and serves to'ensure that the centre of gravity of the gauge is below the measuring points 4.
