Textile treating agents contain a dyeing, mercerizing or wetting agent and also 2-pyrrolidone or a water-soluble N-alkyl, N-hydroxyalkyl or N-acyl derivative thereof. Examples are given of compositions comprising (1) sodium butyl sulphate and N-methyl or N-beta-hydroxyethyl-2-pyrrolidone for use in caustic soda solutions; (2) sodium butyl sulphate, N - beta - hydroxyethyl - 2 - pyrrolidone, isobutanol and water for mercerizing; (3) the dyestuffs 1 - amino - 2 - hydroxynaphthalene - 4 - sulphonic acid--1 - hydroxynaphthalene - 8 - sulphonic acid and 4 - chloro-2 - aminophenol - 5 - sulphonic acid--1-phenyl - 3 - methylpyrazolone, sulphuric acid and N-formyl-2-pyrrolidine for dyeing wool; (4) a sulphur dyestuff, soda, sodium sulphide and 2-pyrrolidone for dyeing cotton, and (5) 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid-beta-naphthylamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, caustic soda and formaldehyde for bottoming cotton in azo dyeing.
