657,826. Electric resonators; wave-guides. SPERRY CORPORATION. Aug. 21, 1948, No. 22107. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1947. [Class 40 (viii)] A directional coupler for ultra high-frequency transmission lines comprises a mass of solid material registering with longitudinal slots in the conducting boundaries of the lines and provided with a number of elements coupling the field spaces inside the boundaries one to another at a number of longitudinally spaced points. As shown, coaxial lines 10, 13 are held in parallel by grooved conducting members 16, 17 which form a muff surrounding the coupler. A mass of dielectric material 35 extends through slots in the outer conductors of the lines and is held in place by pins 36 which engage holes in the muff. A number of identical probes 42 embedded in the dielectric member 35 couple the lines and are spaced over a distance greater than one wavelength according to the spacing of the mean ordinates of successive equal areas bounded by a Gaussian normal error curve or by a sine-squared or sinecubed curve. The dielectric member may be replaced by a conducting member with a number of spaced coupling holes, and the probes may be replaced by coupling loops. The invention may be applied to wave-guides, Fig. 5 (not shown).
