[Class 97 (i)] A device for studying the rapid periodical variations, in the course of time, of the intensity of a light source, comprises a light-transmitting or reflecting device forwarding light rays emitted by the source, means for imparting to the source and to the said device a relative rotary movement in synchronism with the excitation of the source and such that the light rays describe surfaces of revolution having a common axis and fall upon a screen centred on this axis. As shown in Fig. 1, an electric lamp, enclosed in a casing 1, which is apertured at 2, is connected to a source of alternating current so that the intensity of the emitted light varies continuously during each half period. This light falls on a disc 7, which is apertured at 8 and 9 and is rotatable by an electric synchronous motor 3 in synchronism with the excitation of the source, e.g. by energizing the motor from the same source of alternating current as the lamp. Thus, on a screen or photographic plate 10 there is formed a circle of variable brightness, the brightness of each point on the circumference of the circle corresponding to a particular intensity of the emitted light. When the photographic plate is used, the chinks 8, 9 are in the form of curvilinear triangles so that the respective lengths of circular arcs, which are bounded by two sides of the triangle and are concentric with the axis of rotation of the disc 7, increase as the radius of the circles decreases. In another form, a condenser may be disposed in front of the lamp and the emitted light rays may be successively reflected by two rightangled prisms or plane mirrors, one of which is mounted on the shaft of an electric motor, while the other is carried at one end of an arm mounted at its centre on the motor shaft. Another embodiment is described wherein light is focused on an area of a ring of phosphorescent material carried by a rotating plate so that a ring of light of variable intensity is formed by a lens system on the screen or photographic plate. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 (Cancelled) is described. This comprises a cylinder 16, apertured at 17 and 18 and rotatable about an axial light source 15. The excitation period of the source 15 is equal to the time of revolution of the cylinder 16 and observation is made through a cylinder 19. Cylinder 19 may be in the form of a photographic plate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
