592,115. Mixing in definite proportions. WALKER, R. W., and JAMIESON, W. G. May 22, 1945, No. 12772. [Class 86] [Also in Group XIX] The invention comprises means for computing the amount of water to be added to given quantities of cement, sand and ballast to produce concrete with a given water/cement ratio, account being taken of the moisture content of the sand and ballast, and means for controlling the addition to the other ingredients of this computed amount. A cursor is set horizontally along an arm c to indicate weight of cement and the arm is moved vertically to bring the cursor adjacent the chosen one of a set of curves b each showing a different water / cement ratio. A second cursor is then set along a second arm e to indicate weight of sand and is moved vertically to touch a given curve d' of a series correlating sand weight and moisture content therein, the curves d' being carried on a plate fixed to the first arm c. A third cursor is then adjusted horizontally on a third arm f to indicate weight of ballast and is set vertically to touch a given curve of a series correlating ballast weight with moisture content therein and carried on a plate fixed to the second arm e. The position of the arm f corresponds to the volume of water to be added to the batch. A slide jSP6/SP is manually adjusted by a screw jSP4/SP into coincidence with the arm f, this movement being transmitted by gearing to a shaft which positions a float controlling the volume of water which may run into a tank, not shown. The screw jSP4/SP is locked in its adjusted position by a peg and padlock jSP9/SP. The water inlet to the tank is controlled by a cock operated by a lever lSP2/SP, the shaft 11 of which is locked by a detent lSP4/SP pressed by a spring into engagement with teeth lSP3/SP. An arm kSP3/SP is fixed to a square shaft fSP4/SP between horns k fixed to the arm f. When the block jSP6/SP coincides with the arm f, the arm kSP3/SP can be turned to fit into a channel in the block. This movement causes the shaft fSP4/SP to rotate so that a cam lSP9/SP thereon rocks the detent lSP4/SP to release the cock-shaft lSP1/SP for operation. A belt m moved by the block jSP6/SP inhibits turning motion of the arm kSP3/SP when the arm and block do not coincide, it thus being possible to operate the cock only when the float is set to the computed value.
