584,501. Soldering ; uniting by fusion. WASSERMAN, R. D. May 8, 1944, No. 8730. [Class 83 (iv)] A soldering, brazing or welding rod or electrode consists of a coil with a corrosion resistant metallic film extending partially or wholly over its surface of thickness below 0.01 inch and made from a portion of an ingredient of the core so as to protect the core against attack by atmospheric influences during storage without affecting the properties of the core, the sum of the amounts of the said ingredients in the core and film being substantially equal to the total amount of the ingredient required for the weld metal, the quantity of the film being such as to leave the base unaffected when the weld metal is applied thereto. It may be used for uniting bases of ferrous metals or of non-ferrousmetals such as aluininium, zinc, magnesium, &c. The metallic film may consist of silver or silver alloy or nickel and may be applied by dipping in a molten metal bath, by electro-deposition, chemical reaction or by spraying. In one form, part of the silver may be in the coating and part in the core to provide a rod containing 2 per cent of silver, 43 per cent of copper, 11 per cent of nickel, 43.7 per cent of zinc and 0.3 per cent of silicon. U.S.A. Specification 2,279,284 is referred to.
