544,391. Drilling long holes GROENE, W. F., and LUNING, G. W. May 1, 1941, No. 5674. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1940. [Class 83 (iii)] A boring-lathe particularly for gun or tube boring has a slidable boring-bar carrier operated by a screw which may be selectively driven either at high traversing speed from one driving means or at low feed speed from a second driving means, the high speed drive being automatically disengaged by movement of the clutch which engages the low speed drive. The bed 1 is supported on legs 2 ... 5 and carries a centre-drive headstock 6 having chucks 8, 9 which grip the tubular member to be bored. The feed member 12 carrying the boring-bar 13, which is steadied by supports 14, 15, is fitted with a half-nut engaging a longitudinal screw 17 which may be rotated in either direction at feed or traverse rates. The rapid traverse is derived from a motor 21 connected through gears 22, 24, 29, 31 to the screw 17. The gear 24 of this train is carried on a shaft 25 which may be driven at a speed correlated to the work speed by feed rate gearing actuated from a feed shaft 32 driven from the headstock. This shaft is connected by chain gearing 34, shaft 36, and chain gearing 43 to the input shaft 45 of a gear box 46 by which a range of speeds may be imparted to the output shaft 49. The latter shaft drives a shaft 50 of a rangechanging two-speed and reversing gear box 51. The shaft 50 carries a splir ed gear 57 and a loose double gear 55, 56. A second shaft 58 carries a fixed double gear 62, 63, a loose double gear 65, 67 and a fixed pinion 64 engaging gear 55. A third shaft 68 carries loose gears 71, 72 and a splined slidable gear 76 engageable selectively with the gears 71, 72. The gear 57 is engageable either with the gear 62 driving the gear 71, or directly with the gear 71 so as to impart a reversible drive to this gear controlled by a lever 79. The shaft 58 is connected through the pinion 64 and gears 55, 56, 65, 67 to gear 72 which is thus driven at a different speed from but in the same direction as gear 71, the two speeds being obtained by sliding the gear 76 by a lever 78. The gear 76 is connected by a gear 77a and clutch 79a operated by a spool 80 to the shaft 25 of the feed screw train. The clutch spool is actuated by solenoids 84, 85, Fig. VII, acting through a lever 88. The circuit of the traverse motor 21 is arranged so that when the motor is actuated the solenoid 84 is also energized to keep the clutch disengaged the shaft 25 then being idly driven by the gear 24. When the slow feed is to be engaged the solenoid 85 is energized and motor 21 de-energized thus engaging the clutch. and instantly stopping the traverse motor.
