[Class 40 (v)] A stepped voltage or current of the form shown in Fig. 1 is produced by adding two saw-tooth waves A1, A2 of Fig. 2, the waves being produced by charging two equal condensers C1, C2 in series from a common source E through equal resistances R1, R2 and discharging them through gas-filled valves V1, V2. The valve V2 is biased to discharge condenser C2 after a time T so that the saw-tooth waveform A2 is produced, and the valve V1 discharging condenser C1 after a time T 1 so that waveform A1 is produced. The combined waveform shown in Fig. 1, is taken from between the junction point P of the two condensers and the negative terminal of the supply.
