481,015. Compound fabrics. SHEPHERD, T. L. July 29, 1936, Nos. 21020 and 21279. [Class 140] An interlining comprising a textile fabric to which has been attached a preformed film or films of thermoplastic cellulose derivative or thermoplastic artificial resin, is placed between plies of textile fabric and the assembly is then united under heat and pressure to form multiply fabrics or collars, cuffs, shirt fronts or other wearing apparel. The process of attachment of the film or films to the fabric to make the interlining is effected in such a manner that the physical structure of the film or films remains substantially intact and unaltered. The attaching may consist in (1) sandwiching a film of cellulose acetate between two pieces of fine butter muslin, wetting the assembly with a solvent for the cellulose acetate, e.g. acetone, and pressing the assembly together with or without heat, e.g. at 30 to 40 pounds per square inch without heat ; (2) securing the film between the two layers of muslin by sewing; (3) sticking by adhesive a layer of fabric to each side of a film ; the adhesive may be glue, gum, or solutions of cellulose acetate, benzyl, methyl or ethyl cellulose, or nitrocellulose, and may be applied by printing in lines or dots on the film or fabric or both, or by blocking, spraying, stencilling or dipping ; (4) a film of cellulose acetate is attached to one or both sides of a fabric or between two fabrics by applying to the film or fabric or both a solution, e.g. in methyl or ethyl alcohol, of a plasticizer such as cyclohexyl paratoluene sulphonamide or butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate or a mixture thereof, and uniting by slight heat and pressure ; if acetone is used as the solvent unity is achieved merely by pressure just before complete evaporation of the acetone, i.e. while the fabric is still tacky. The interlining may consist of several alternate films and fabric sheets. The films may be roughened as by sand-papering or by spraying thereon drops of cellulose derivative solution, crimped, creped, punctured, indented, corrugated, or made porous by the inclusion and removal of watersoluble materials ; or the complete interlining may be punctured. The films may contain loose textile fibres. The films may be made of cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, vinyl resins (e.g. Vinyloid H), or poly-esters of acrylic acid, such as the methyl or ethyl esters or mixtures thereof.
