421,752. Utilizing inertia to obtain movements in machinery ; variable-speed gearing. IVERSEN, P. A. SCOTT-, Strandnejen, Snekkersten, Denmark. Aug. 28, 1933, No. 23874. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iv)] [See also Group XXIX] A shaft or body rotating about an axis B is allowed to rotate on its own axis A, or is held fast thereon by two mutually displaceable mass portions m, which are subject to competing centrifugal effects due to their rotations about the axes A, B respectively. As the speed of rotation of the body about the axis B increases, the weights fly out to the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the body L is held stationary on its axis. The inner weight may carry a nose to lock it to a member fixed on the axis A. The masses may be slidably arranged in two arcuate tubes, or in a single tube, where they are pressed apart by a spring. Alternatively, the masses may be connected by pivoted arms to the shaft A. The masses may also comprise liquid or powder in a cylinder b, Fig. 7, divided by a partition V. When the cylinder b is rotating, the liquid or powder is evenly distributed as shown, but when the centrifugal force about the axis B preponderates, it collects at one side of the cylinder. A modified form comprises a drum with internal curved blades. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 15, gears 3, 4 are connected to each other and to a bracket 9 carrying weights m slidable on a rod 10, and the whole is rotatable on a crank 2 connected to the driving shaft 1. The gears 3, 4 engage respectively a gear connected to the driven shaft 6 and a gear 7 on a sleeve 8 which is prevented from rotating backwards by a ratchet and pawl. When the driving shaft 1 is accelerated, while a heavy load is applied to the driven shaft 8, the wheel 4 rolls round the wheel 7, and the wheel 3 drives the wheel 5 and shaft 6 forwardly at a reduced speed. If, as for example in motor vehicles, the shaft 6 may over-run, the velocity of rotation of the weights m about the axis A will then be reduced, so that both weights go to one end of the rod 10 owing to the rotation about the axis B. The gears 3, 4 are thus held rigid on the shaft 2 and the whole gear rotates solid. Increased load on the shaft 6 causes the rotation of the gears 3, 4 to begin again. In a further form, a planetary centrifugal device similar to 1, 2, 4, 9, 10, m, Fig. 15, is arranged between the driving and driven shafts of a F÷ttinger coupling to give a solid drive above a certain speed.
