382,394. Regenerative furnaces. PRIEST, C. F. and MATHISON, J., 123, Albert Road, Middlesbrough. Sept. 30, 1931, No. 27243. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] In gas-fired reheating furnaces of the type in which combustion takes place in passages 9 beneath the hearth 3, the products of combustion passing thence to the heating chamber 4, two reversible regenerators 1, 2 are disposed in separate locations below the hearth, each comprising a series of horizontal passages 7 connected by passages 8 at alternate ends, and a supply of gas is admitted to the regenerator in which air is being heated by a pipe 30 at the ends remote from the heating chamber of the top passages, or at points below the top passages. Further gas may be supplied by a pipe 32 to provide a reducing atmosphere in the heating chamber and a supply of air may be admitted by a pipe 40 to the other regenerator to complete combustion. Air is supplied from a pipe 43 through a reversing valve 19 to pipes 15 or 16 connected to the regenerators by passages 17, 18, the waste gases being exhausted to a flue 25 through a reversing valve 22. Gas is supplied from a pipe 44 through a reversing valve 28 and pipes 35 or 36 to pipes 26, 27 from which branch the pipes 29 .. 32. The secondary air is supplied from a pipe 45 through a reversing valve 37 and pipes 33, 34. The reversing valves are connected to a common operating device 46 and the various pipes are individually controlled by valves 42. The gas admitted by the pipe 30 is mixed with the preheated air in the upper passages of the regenerator and partially burns in the left-hand passages 9 heating one-half of the hearth from beneath, the other half being heated by the combustion of the smoke in the right-hand passages 9. If a reducing atmosphere is not required, combustion is substantially completed in the passages 9 and no secondary gas or air supplied through the pipes 32, 40. The regenerators comprise spaced rows of bricks 13, Fig. 4, separated by courses 14 laid without spaces.
