351,624. Cigarette-making machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(American Machine & Foundry Co. ; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) April 14, 1930, No. 11746. [Class 130.] A strip of covering or other material, e.g. tipping material for a cigarette wrapper, is fed until its leading edge reaches a predetermined applying position and is then held stationary while a severing device cuts from the stationary strip a section which is applied to an adhesive portion of the continuously fed wrapper strip when brought into register with the cut-off section. Means are provided to render the adhesive applying mechanism ineffective when the covering material means fails to feed the covering material, Referring to Figs. 1 and 3, paper P is guided by rollers 13, 14, 15 to co-operating rollers 16, 17 which lead it past a roller 18 to the tobacco feed of a cigarette machine. The cork strip C passes to a roller 27 through a guide 25 and feed rollers 31, 32, mounted on an arm 29 connected to an eccentric pin 35 and as the arm 29 swings on its shaft 28 it periodically stops the motion of the cork strip at a ledger plate 34. A rotating knife 41 attached to a shaft 50 driven by bevel gear from a shaft 36 cuts the strip C and the cut tip projects between the rollers 16, 17 to meet the paper P. The whole of the mechanism is driven from the cigarette machine shaft. Paste is applied to the paper strip P at regular intervals between the rollers 14, 15, the roller 14 having a depression 44 and rotating in a paste receptacle 43, while the roller 15 has a raised portion 47 which presses the paper into the depression 44. The feed-roller 17 has a raised portion 17a which co-operates with the roller 16 to attach the tip C to the pasted portion of strip P. An electromagnet 79 when energized attracts a catch 78 freeing the end of a lever 77 which is then pulled by a spring 81, and lifts the gears on the rollers 14, 15 out of engagement thereby terminating the paste feed. The electromagnet is energized by a battery 85, connected to a contact finger 87, resting on the cork tip C and carried by a periodically swinging bell-crank lever 89 controlled by a cam 93 attached to the knifeholder 51. When the feed ceases the finger 87 contacts with the metal plate 42 and completes the circuit and energizes the electromagnet.
