Density separators, discharging.-In a machine for separating liquids from solids a layer of mercury covers the wall of the bowl during the separation, and the separated solids are transported by a stream of liquid over the mercury to discharge openings. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the liquid to be purified is fed through the tube a and the clarified liquid is discharged through openings d. The solids are thrown on to the surface of the mercury layer h and are carried by a portion of the liquid through the channels f to the discharge openings g. Where the heavy liquid passing out with the solids is small in volume, a flushing liquid may be supplied to assist in the discharge of the solids. This liquid is supplied through channels which open near to the inlet ends of the channels f. In the modified form of apparatus shown in Fig. 2 the solids are washed out by part of the liquid supplied for treatment. This liquid passes through the pipes n, o and along the mercury surface, and washes the solids through pipes l with contracted discharge openings m. The heavy separated liquid is discharged through channels i. Liquid is discharged from the pipes n in the vicinity of the pipes l to split up collections of solids.
