296,042. Ramsden, J. V. May 24, 1927. Microscopes.-A microscope of the reflex type comprises a source of illumination 1, a condenser 2 by which the light is directed on to the stage 3, the image of the object being formed on a screen or photographic plate 5 after reflection by the mirror 4. The invention is mainly concerned with means for independently adjusting the stage and substage in the direction of the optical axis and displacing them laterally with respect to the axis. The casing 20, Figs. 4 and 5, constituting a camera body is divided by a partition 21 into separate compartments, one of which carries the reflector 24 and supports the microscope apparatus. A ruled screen or photographic plate may be fitted into the groove 25 and a focusing magnifier 27 may be fitted in tha cover. Fixed pillars 28, 29 are secured by straps 30, 31 to the camera body 20 and a movable pillar is supported in guides 33. The substage 50 and a mechanical stage 51 are detachably secured to the pillar 32 the stage 51 being arranged to slide on the tube 32 by a strap 52. Pivot pin 56, Fig. 6, maintain the stages in position against the pillar 29 and can be turned away to permit the stages to be swung out of the optical axis round the pillar 32. The mechanical stage may be rotated in the ring 51 and moved transversely by the lever 65. The objective is carried in a tube 72 and provision is made for illumination of an opaque object through the aperture 99 by the lamp 95. Objects on the stage 51 are normally illuminated by light reflected by a mirror 42 from a source 37. Fine adjustment simultaneously of the stages 50, 51 is effected by rotation of the head 85 carrying a cam disc which moves the cranked lever 82 to raise or lower the pillar 32. Means are also provided for the attachment to the apparatus of the usual necessary apparatus, such as polarizers, &c. The additional compartment 89 is utilized to photograph a label 91 on the plate 25 by means of a camera 92. The whole apparatus is mounted on a table 106 supported on columns 108 having shock absorbers 109 at each end and additional buffers 110 beneath these columns, obviating vibrational defects.
