Compound boilers. - In a Lancashire or likeboiler 1, of the kind heated by an external waterjacketted combustion chamber 3 fired at the upper end by liquid or pulverulent fuel, the water jacket 7 is extended at 7x to surround the conduits 10 which deliver the hot gases into the boiler flues 2. The jacket 7, 7x may be connected in the boiler system or it may be used as a feedwater heater, in which case either the heated water is fed from the jacket direct to the boiler or, as shown in Fig. 5, the water circulates by thermo-siphon action through the jacket and a tank 17 from which latter it is withdrawn by a pump 20 and delivered to the boiler through a pipe 21x.
