Resistance to propulsion, reducing.-Friction of the floats, &c. of aircraft or the hulls of hydroplane boats is diminished by the use of endless bands on the under surface passing over freelypivoted rollers and exposed to the stream of water on the receding side only so as to be driven thereby. Fig. 3 shows the invention applied to a hydroplane hull. The speed of the bands may be limited by using them to drive a dynamo for wireless or lighting. In the case of a float, Fig. 5, the lower surface of the band may be under pressure from spring-pressed rollers 22. Two such floats may be mounted laterally of the fuselage by knuckle-joints 24 with means by which the pilot can vary their incidence. The elevator also may be formed as a float, with a band on its under side. The bands may be of rubber or rubber-coated fabric, or (especially for landing devices) may consist of metal sections 25, Fig. 9, pivotally assembled on cross-rods 26 which take into flutes on the rollers.
