Mines, marine.-The mooring rope of a submarine mine is provided with a combined gripping and cutting device adapted, when encountered by a paravane rope, to cut this rope to free the paravane and simultaneously to grip the part of the rope remaining connected to the ship toeing the paravane, whereby the mine is swung against the side of said ship. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device comprises a shank 11 wich arms 13. 14 which are pivoted at 130, 140 and are adapted to close against fixed arms 15, 16, under the pull of the mooring rope 10 transmitted to the arms through a rope 18 disposed over a number of suitable pulleys. This occurs when a paravane rope is caught in one of the prongs 12 at the sides of the device and the pull of this rope shears a pin 19, thereby unfastening the pivoted arms. The cutting operation is performed by blades 131, 141 at the end of the arms, and the gripping operation by the side edges of the arms as the moving arms close in against the others. The cutting device is similar to the one described in Specification 243,411.
