Fires, preventing, in ships and in connection with storing coal.-In order to prevent the spontaneous ignition of coal in ships' holds and bunkers, stores, &c., a substance capable of chemically absorbing oxygen at moderate temperatures is distributed throughout the coal during stowage. Such substance preferably consists of iron or iron alloy in the form of thin plates, which may be in contact with other substances favouring rusting in the presence of moisture or acid.
