Starting. - In valve-gear for starting Diesel and like engines by compressed air, a cylinder and piston device on the end of the cam-actuated tappet rod throws the gear into operative position on the admission of compressed air. In the form shown. two pistons B, D are arranged in an openended cylinder A carried by the valve-rod E1 of the compresedair starting valve E2. The piston B carries the cam bowl B2, which is normally held away from the cam C by a spring G2 encircling the stem G of the piston B. On the admission of compressed air to a conduit A3, the pistons are separated to an extent determined by the engagement of the piston D with a shoulder G3 on the stem G; the cam bowl B2 is thus brought into a position in which it is actuated by the cam.
