Viscous mineral oils and oil residues are converted into oils of lower vicosity by heating them to about 400 DEG C. under a pressure of 4-6 atmospheres for so short a time, say half an hour, as to minimize the splitting up of the oils. The product is treated at 150 DEG C. with a current of steam until the flash point of 160 DEG C. is reached, and is suitable for use as a fuel oil.
